Decreasing width of the American newspaper web led to narrower news columns, and a demand for a more condensed typeface. Reaction from the quiet texture of Excelsior suggested a stronger contrast, more like Regal. Griffith designed Linotype Corona, which has been the leading American news design for the last thirty-five years. Extreme pressure for large sizes on narrow columns lead to condensed teletypesetter versions that lacked legibility, particularly in many of the unlicensed versions.Corona® Font families
