What is the Highway Gothic font?

The five Highway Gothic fonts are designed specifically for use by barrier companies and state, county and city Departments of Transportation sign production shops to fabricate signs to meet the specifications of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Standard Alphabets for Highway Signs. The Highway alphabets are available in Series B, Series C, Series D, Series E and Series E(Modified), all with kerned letterspacing to meet D.O.T. specifications. All packages include capitals, lower case letters and arrows, plus a border-generating font. More… The U.S.D.O.T. has complex spacing rules for these signs. These specifications have been met in the design and the kerning of the fonts, making it easy for sign makers to automatically generate the proper alignment. The user must use a program that supports kerning, in order that the D.O.T. spacing rules are met. (For other purposes, there are several spacing characters built into the font.) Please note that there is now a new version of this font Pixymbols Highway Gothic 2002.
